In a world where bilingualism is far more common than monolingualism, Ofelia García’s Bilingual Education in the 21st Century: A Global Perspective is the perfect demonstration of the need to widen the linguistic ideological lens used to interpret theories of bilingual education in order to fully embrace and reflect this reality. Even though it may be common knowledge to state that today’s world is becoming more multilingual and multicultural due to global socioeconomic, political, and technological developments, García’s book acknowledges this diversity and bilingualism as its norm and effectively shows the development of theories and practices of bilingual education as global and interrelated, yet complex and dynamic. Perhaps this development can be best represented by the beautiful banyan tree that graces the book’s cover: it is complex, constantly growing, and changing in various directions while stemming from sustainable and diverse social realities. At the very least, García takes the reader on a journey from the origins of the theories of bilingual education, to where the field stands today, and the heteroglossic path it should follow in the future.
