Unlocking the Mystery of Screen Time: A Parent's Dive into Video Game Addiction 🎮👀Hey everyone! 👋 You know I'm usually all about product management and user experience. But today, I'm shifting gears. My 7-year-old is addicted to Minecraft, and it's got me concerned. So, I decided to explore video game addiction. Here's what I've learned🎮 Recognition of the IssueVideo game addiction is officially termed "Internet Gaming Disorder" by organizations like WHO. Like how we recognize alcoholism, we mustn't underestimate the impact of excessive gaming, especially among teens.🇺🇸 American Psychiatric Association & DSM:There's some opposition from the American Psychiatric Association regarding its inclusion in the DSM-5.Imagine debating in a medical conference whether binge-watching should be considered an addiction. That's the level of controversy we're talking about here.🔍 Signs and Symptoms:Signs include declining school or work performance, social isolation, and an obsessive focus on gaming. If your child used to love soccer but now skips practice to game, that's a red flag.🤷♂️ Moderation vs Detox:You can either go for a complete detox or try to moderate gaming time. Think of it as a diet plan; some people cut out sugar entirely, while others reduce intake.💡 Practical Tips for Moderation:1. Create a Schedule: Plan your day to avoid impulsive gaming. e.g., Use calendar apps to set 'gaming hours' and stick to them.In our house, we established an agenda for the after-school hours. This Agenda includes chores and conditions for 'earning' a one-hour video game-related activity.2. Play With Someone Responsible: Team up with someone who's not addicted. E.g., Partner up with your kid's aunt or uncle for a family game night. In our family case, we deliberately schedule weekly activities during which the phones and gaming consoles are less available. Our son learns to appreciate associating with other friends and family members who are less into video games. In that way, even if a 'glitch' occurs, we are certain that social pressure will make our son prefer healthier activities.3. Time Management: Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique can help. E.g., Game for 25 minutes, then spend 5 minutes doing household chores. This technique worked like magic on our son. An app activated on one of the parent's devices is set to notify that the videogame time slot is over. Since our son is so into gaming and conditioning, once the alarm is on, 85% of the time, he ditches the controller and seeks different kinds of activity (Reading, drawing, or building real Lego Minecraft worlds)👨⚕️ Disclaimer and Source:I'm not a psychologist. If you notice abnormal behavior in a loved one, consult a professional therapist. 🧠 "Unpacking the Controversy: Should Video Game Addiction Be Medically Recognized?" 🧠Hey folks! Today, let’s delve into an issue that has sparked heated debates among medical professionals, researchers, and parents—Video Game Addiction. But first, let me ask you, do you think compulsively playing games like 'World of Warcraft' or 'League of Legends' can be classified as a real addiction? As a proud father of an 8-year-old with an obsession/addiction to Minecraft (more specific studies and insights will be shared soon) I started diving into academic studies that unveil the manipulations the gaming industry uses to hook their users as well as the psychological theories they base their game features upon.🔬 The Science Behind ItRecent studies suggest that video games might act like traditional substances of abuse, impacting the same neural pathways. This has led to the term "Internet Gaming Disorder" (IGD). Countries like China and South Korea have even established treatment facilities to tackle this emerging public health issue.🧠 Neurological EvidenceIncreasing neurological evidence shows similarities between the effects of drugs and video games on the user’s brain. But here's the catch—many researchers argue that labeling such behavior as "addiction" might pathologize what is essentially normal teenage behavior.📊 Diagnostic DilemmasThe American Psychiatric Association considered adding IGD to its latest diagnostic manual but decided to hold off. The criteria for diagnosing such a condition are still under debate, and the term itself has been critiqued for its negative connotations.💡 Why This MattersWhether or not video games are addictive, they have a real-world impact. Evidence suggests that excessive gaming can be associated with depression, ADHD, and even household violence. However, it’s crucial to differentiate between a symptom of existing issues and a standalone disorder.🤔 My Two CentsAs someone deeply interested in human behavior and cognition, the topic deserves nuanced attention. We can't rush into labeling it an addiction without solid scientific backing. But ignoring its potential negative impact isn't an option either.👇 What Do You Think? Is it too early to classify video gaming as a behavioral addiction? Or should we treat it with the same seriousness as substance abuse?Drop your thoughts below, and if this piqued your interest, you’ll definitely want to read the full article for a comprehensive understanding. 📖https://lnkd.in/dzZqxNrM#VideoGames #Addiction #BehavioralScience #CognitivePsychology #PublicHealth

Online Gaming Addiction and Basic Psychological Needs Among Adolescents: The Mediating Roles of Meaning in Life and Responsibility, Published:10 January 2023AbstractIndividuals whose basic needs are naturally satisfied are much less dependent on their environment and more autonomous. Basic psychological needs (i.e., the general motivators of human actions) are significant predictors of online gaming addiction. Moreover, it has been posited that meaning and responsibility in life are at the center of life from an existential point of view. Therefore, a hypothetical model was tested to examine the relationships between basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness), online gaming addiction, responsibility, and meaning in life. Data were collected from a sample of 546 participants. Mediation analysis was conducted, and the results indicated that basic psychological needs, online gaming addiction, responsibility, and meaning in life had significant negative and positive relationships. The findings indicated that responsibility and meaning in life had a serial mediating effect in the relationship between basic psychological needs and online gaming addiction. The findings also showed that the inverse relationship between online gaming addiction and basic psychological needs was at least partially explained by meaning in life and responsibility. The results of the present study are of great importance and suggest that interventions to satisfy the basic psychological needs of adolescents may help prevent online gaming addiction.SolutionS-Center Verslavingszorg Link:

In the contemporary digital age, the pervasive presence of the internet has revolutionized the way individuals interact, work, and entertain themselves. However, as our dependency on the digital sphere intensifies, concerns about the detrimental consequences of excessive online engagement have come to the forefront. Online addiction, a multifaceted phenomenon impacting individuals of all age groups, demands a comprehensive understanding to mitigate its adverse effects on mental health and overall well-being.Understanding Online Addiction:Online addiction, also known as internet addiction, refers to the excessive, compulsive use of the internet and digital devices leading to negative consequences in various aspects of life. It manifests in different forms, including gaming addiction, social media addiction, and compulsive internet browsing. Psychological research highlights that addictive online behaviors can lead to diminished interpersonal relationships, academic or professional underachievement, and increased mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.Impact on Mental Well-being:A growing body of evidence suggests a strong correlation between prolonged online engagement and deteriorating mental health. The constant influx of information and the pressure to constantly stay connected in the virtual realm can foster feelings of anxiety, social isolation, and inadequacy. Studies also indicate that the reward mechanisms embedded within digital platforms can trigger addictive behaviors, leading to a detrimental cycle of dependency and withdrawal, affecting one’s self-esteem and overall psychological resilience.Social and Interpersonal Consequences:Online addiction has broader social implications, contributing to the erosion of real-life social connections and the development of meaningful relationships. The allure of virtual communities often leads individuals to prioritize online interactions over face-to-face communication, leading to a decline in social skills and a diminished sense of empathy. Moreover, excessive screen time often hinders the development of essential life skills, such as effective communication, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation, resulting in a generation less equipped to navigate real-world challenges.Want to know more or have queries about Online Addiction?Join us on “The Cyber Files”.
